Does road tax transfer when you buy or swap a car?

Vehicle tax does not move to the new keeper. Here is what buyers, sellers and both parties to a swap need to arrange before driving away.

No: vehicle tax does not transfer to the next keeper. This applies whether you buy a car for cash or receive one as part of a swap.

What the outgoing keeper does

Tell DVLA when you sell or transfer the vehicle using the official service. DVLA cancels the vehicle tax when the transfer is notified. Eligible refunds cover full remaining months; do not assume you will receive a refund for part of the current month.

What the incoming keeper does

Tax the vehicle before driving it, or declare it off road if appropriate. Do not rely on the previous keeper's tax or a claim that the car is already taxed. Follow the official tax service instructions with the documents provided at transfer.

In a swap, do this twice

Both people are incoming and outgoing keepers. Each person must notify DVLA about the car they are transferring and arrange tax for the car they receive. Insurance is a separate responsibility: arrange cover before driving.

Do not treat advertised running costs as your bill

A listing may show provider-supplied tax information. Check the current official position for the specific vehicle before budgeting; do not assume an advert figure establishes your exact tax liability.
